“Seabright” the Mosaic Fish

Seabright was inspired by Kharybdis, a monstrous whirlpool that spits out water three times a day. In Greek mythology, Kharybdis was the daughter of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Loyal to her father, she extended the waves he created, sinking enough land to anger Zeus. As punishment, Zeus transformed her into a terrifying sea creature.

Three times a day, Kharybdis's gaping maw opens, sucking in ships and sea life that pass by. She then spits out the remnants, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. This monstrous whirlpool is often found lurking in the Straits of Messina, where it poses a deadly threat to sailors and all those who pass by.

In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus faces the perilous choice between Scylla, a six-headed monster, and Kharybdis. Opting for Scylla, he saves his crew, though at a terrible cost. While Kharybdis's physical form is less well-defined and subject to interpretation, her insatiable appetite for the sea remains a constant threat to those who dare to navigate her domain.

The Mosaic interactive sculpture in front of you is named “Seabright” and is our version of Kharybdis

Enjoy and have fun with her!
